Many people and organisations wish to make an appropriate Acknowledgement of Country at their events.
An ‘Acknowledgement of Country’ differs from a ‘Welcome to Country’. While a ‘Welcome to Country’ can only be performed by a Traditional Owner, anyone with a sincere heart can perform a respectful ‘Acknowledgement of Country’.
A suggested format for an Acknowledgement of Country is:
“I/we wish to acknowledge the custodians of this land, the Waywurru people. I/we would like to pay my/our respects to their Elders, past and present; and extend my/our recognition to their descendants who may be here today. I/we recognise and respect their cultural heritage, beliefs and relationship with the land, which continue to be important to the Waywurru people, and I/we would also like to offer my/our respects to any other First Nations people who may be present today.”

For some areas on the border of neighbouring First Nations countries, you may wish to also acknowledge neighbouring Traditional Owner groups.
